Your Race Car Is Full. A Third Sponsor Wants In.

Jett Johnson·October 21, 2026·6 min read

You've got a hood, two doors, two quarter panels and a roof. Two of them are spoken for. Then a third company says yes, and asks, "Where do we go?"

Most racers panic and start slapping logos on the mirrors. That's the wrong move. The car isn't full. Your hierarchy is.

LeadFoot Racing Spec Miata #121 in a clean side profile at High Plains Raceway A race car has a lot of surface and less real estate than it looks like. Every panel you sell is a decision.

Quick disclaimer: I race cars and sell sponsorship training. I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice. Have a professional read any agreement that changes what a current partner already paid for.

If you're staring at this exact problem, The Funded Season Kit ($197) is built for it. It has the sponsor tracker, the package builder and the contracts chapter in one place. Here's the playbook behind it.

Step 1: Map the car like a seller, not a fan

Take one side-profile photo. Draw boxes on every zone you could sell: hood, doors, quarters, roof, rear, windshield banner, mirrors.

Now write each zone's current owner, size and contract end date next to it. Most racers have never done this. They carry the whole car in their head.

Here's what usually shows up. One zone is doing all the work. Three zones are cluttered. And one or two are empty because nobody asked.

Step 2: Stop treating every panel as equal

Pro teams keep a strict hierarchy. One sponsor-sales page describes the primary sponsor on the hood. It calls the quarter panels "another very expensive area," and says placement and size influence the cost greatly.

That's NASCAR money, not club racing money. But the logic travels. A big logo on the biggest surface is a different product than a small logo on a door.

And more logos don't make the car worth more. RTR Sports, reviewing Formula 1 liveries, puts it bluntly: density is the enemy of recall. A crowded car "dilutes even its anchor partners."

Read that twice. If you cram sponsor number three on, you may shrink the value of sponsors one and two. They'll notice.

Step 3: Four ways to make room

Wait for the term to end. If partner one's deal runs through the season, you don't touch their spot. Offer partner three the next opening and a start date. A confident "you're first in line for 2027" beats a squeezed logo.

Re-cut the package at renewal. Maybe partner two doesn't need a full door. A tighter logo with more clear space can read better than a big one lost in a crowd. Do this only with their agreement, at a renewal, never quietly. Pulling or shrinking a live partner's spot is the situation I cover in unwinding a decal without breaching the deal.

Sell something that isn't a panel. In MotoGP, one agency's data shows the rider drives about 48% of weekend visibility. It says a small, well-placed space on the suit can be worth more than a large fairing decal. That's pro, televised data, so don't quote it in a pitch. The principle holds: suit, helmet, trailer, crew shirts and content all count. We ranked them in race car sponsorship assets, tiered.

Price by zone. A small spot should cost less than a hood. If your newest partner wants in cheap, give them a small spot at a small number. Our method for setting that number is in how to price racing sponsorship.

Step 4: Put the placement in writing

Every agreement should say where the logo goes and about how big it is. One line is enough. "Logo on the driver's door, approximately 12 by 18 inches, for the 2027 season."

Without it, the next request becomes a negotiation from memory. With it, you can point to the page. The One-Page Sponsorship Agreement covers the other terms that belong beside it.

Step 5: Plan the physical swap

Vinyl comes off, but not for free. Chemical Guys' guide says to use a heat gun or hair dryer on a low setting and keep it moving, lift with plastic, and use an automotive-safe adhesive remover on the leftover glue. Test any solvent on a hidden spot first.

Old decals can also leave a faint outline where the paint was shielded from sun. Plan for that before you promise a sponsor a clean panel.

Order new graphics before the event, not the week of. Keep a spare set in the trailer. And never change a live partner's spot between sessions without telling them first.

What we do, and what we don't claim

LeadFoot Racing currently runs with five partners: Liquid Moly, Les Schwab, OG Racing, Engine Ice and FCP Euro. I'm not going to hand you a magic formula for how many logos fit on a Miata, because I don't have one, and anyone who does is guessing.

What I do know is that a map, a ranking and a written placement line keep a good problem from turning into a fight.

The short version

  • Map every zone with its owner, size and end date.
  • Rank the zones. Biggest partner, biggest surface.
  • Add the new sponsor at a term boundary, in a smaller spot, or off the bodywork.
  • Price by zone, and write the placement into the agreement.
  • Plan the vinyl swap before you promise anything.

Want the package builder, the tracker and the contracts chapter in one place? The Funded Season Kit ($197) is the full system. And if you only want a second set of eyes on the pitch you're about to send the new sponsor, The Pitch Inspection ($39) is the quick version.

A full car is a good problem. It means people believed in you.

Do you believe?
